Hong Kong, 1962. Chow Mo-Wan, journaliste, emménage dans l’appartement voisin de celui de Su Li-Zhen, secrétaire d’un homme d’affaires. Leurs époux respectifs travaillent beaucoup et les laissent souvent seuls. À la suite de troublantes coïncidences, Chow et Su se rendent compte tour à tour que leurs conjoints entretiennent une liaison. Essayant de comprendre comment a pu naître cette relation adultère, les deux délaissés se rapprochent peu à peu. Au cours de promenades et de dîners au restaurant, ils échangent des confidences et apprennent à se connaître.
