SRFF is a nonprofit 501 c 3 organization founded in January 2013 by actress/filmmaker Nora Armani as a response to the proliferation of violence and violent forms of storytelling. The mission of SRFF is to promote films with socially relevant™ film content and filmmakers who tell human interest stories. Over 795 films from 40 countries have been screened, bringing meaningful entertainment and social awareness to the community. Spokespersons of SR Socially Relevant™ Film Festival NY include Amy Goodman of Democracy Now, Erin Brockovich, Martin Sheen, Pulitzer Prize and Tony award-winner Robert Schenkkan, best-selling French novelist Marc Levy, Academy Award Nominee and Emmy Award Winner Guy Davidi, and American TV personality and author Gretchen Carlson. Honor awardees of 2023 were Gale Anne Hurd, Tonya Lewis Lee, Robert Schenkkan, and Nicole Ansari-Cox. Honor awardee of 2025 was Karren Karagulian of Anora.

Nés en Égypte, Nora Armani et Gerald Papasian créent en 1986 le spectacle Le Chant d’Ararat, qui s’inspire de la poésie arménienne. Autour de ce projet, le film tisse passé et présent, documentaire et fiction, pour dépeindre une identité qui apparaît tantôt comme un refuge, tantôt comme une prison. Filmé à Avignon, Paris, Londres, Los Angeles et en Arménie pendant son indépendance, le film suit les pérégrinations de ses protagonistes.
