Altos Labs pour l’augmentation de la durée de vie en bonne santé

En 2021, Altos Labs a été enregistrée aux États-Unis et au Royaume-Uni.[3] Elle opérera depuis la Californie (États-Unis) et Cambridge (Royaume-Uni), et certains travaux seront réalisés au Japon.[4]

Investisseurs
L'un des premiers investisseurs d'Altos Labs est un véhicule d'investissement détenu au profit de la Breakthrough Foundation, fondée par l'investisseur et philanthrope russo-israélien en sciences et technologies Yuri Milner et son épouse Julia. La fondation soutient des projets philanthropiques existants et futurs dans le domaine des sciences fondamentales.[5] Milner avait déjà manifesté son intérêt pour les technologies anti-âge. En octobre 2020, il a co-organisé une réunion où des experts ont présenté leurs recherches et rendu compte des tests sur les animaux, et où le concept d'Altos Labs a été développé.

Altos Labs a levé 3 milliards de dollars américains lors d'un tour de table auprès d'investisseurs en janvier 2022.[3] Elle est considérée comme la start-up biotechnologique la mieux financée à ce jour.[4] Parmi les investisseurs figureraient Jeff Bezos, fondateur d’Amazon[6], et Robert Nelsen, fondateur d'ARCH Venture Partners[7].

Les salaires des chercheurs principaux d'Altos Labs pourraient être dix fois supérieurs à ceux d'instituts de recherche comparables[8].

Installations
Altos Labs prévoit d'établir des installations de recherche à Cambridge, dans la baie de San Francisco et à San Diego, dans un premier temps[9].

Mission
Atypique pour une entreprise privée, l'accent sera initialement mis sur la recherche fondamentale, sans perspective immédiate de produit commercialement viable[2].

En janvier 2022, le président de l'entreprise, Hans Bishop, a affirmé qu'Altos Labs travaillait sur l'augmentation de la « durée de vie en bonne santé » des humains et que l'allongement de la longévité ne serait qu'une « conséquence accidentelle ».[4]

Altos Labs, Inc. is an American biotechnology research company. Altos Labs' goal is to develop life extension therapies that can halt or reverse the human aging process. Specialized cell therapies based on induced pluripotent stem cells are to be developed for this purpose. History

Altos Labs was formally started on 19 January 2022.^[2] The name Altos Labs is based on the city of Los Altos in California.^[2] The idea for Altos Labs originated with cell biologist and entrepreneur Richard D. Klausner, who co-founded the company with Hans Bishop.

In 2021, Altos Labs was registered in the United States and the United Kingdom.^[3] It will operate out of California (U.S.) and Cambridge (U.K.), with some work performed in Japan.^[4]

Investors

One of the early investors of Altos Labs is an investment vehicle held for the benefit of the Breakthrough Foundation, founded by Russian-Israeli science and technology investor and philanthropist Yuri Milner and his wife Julia. The foundation supports existing and future philanthropic projects in fundamental sciences.^[5] Milner had previously shown interest in anti-aging technologies, in October 2020, he co-hosted a meeting where experts presented their research, reported on animal testing, and the concept for Altos Labs was developed.

Altos Labs raised US$3 billion in a funding round from investors in January 2022.^[3] It is said to be the best funded biotech start-up to date.^[4] Investors reportedly include Amazon founder Jeff Bezos^[6] and ARCH Venture Partners founder Robert Nelsen.^[7]

Salaries for principal investigators at Altos Labs may be ten times higher than at comparable research institutions.^[8]

Facilities

Altos Labs plans to establish research facilities in Cambridge, the San Francisco Bay Area, and in San Diego as a first step.^[9]

Mission

Atypical of a private company, the initial focus will be on basic research without immediate prospects of a commercially viable product.^[2]

In January 2022, the company's president, Hans Bishop, argued that Altos Labs was working on increasing the "healthspan" of humans and that longevity extension would only be "an accidental consequence".^[4]
