The curtain has fallen on the 78th edition of the Cannes Film Festival, an event marked by a selection rich in emotion, bold cinematic choices, and powerful statements. The Official Competition jury, presided over this year by French actress Juliette Binoche, was entrusted with the delicate task of awarding the coveted Palme d’Or among 22 competing films.
Surrounding Juliette Binoche was a cosmopolitan and committed panel made up of leading figures in contemporary cinema: Halle Berry, Oscar-winning American actress and filmmaker; Payal Kapadia, Indian director and screenwriter who first gained attention at Cannes in the "Un Certain Regard" section; Alba Rohrwacher, a key figure in Italian auteur cinema; Leïla Slimani, Franco-Moroccan novelist and member of the High Council for Francophonie; Dieudo Hamadi, Congolese documentarian acclaimed for his politically engaged work; Hong Sangsoo, a cornerstone of Korean independent cinema; Carlos Reygadas, a Mexican filmmaker known for his bold aesthetic; and Jeremy Strong, the American actor best known for his role in the series Succession.
Over the course of twelve days, the jury attended screenings, engaged in lively debates, and shared passionate discussions about films from around the globe—each one offering a singular voice and a committed vision of the world.
The eagerly awaited awards honored films that moved, challenged, or captivated audiences. Through their selections, the jury members emphasized the importance of a free cinema—one that is open to the world and able to address the major issues of our time. The awards also reflect the diversity of perspectives within this international jury, echoing the vitality and universality of the cinema celebrated at Cannes.
