Le jardin de Gladioli , une collection de photos à Alep

A few years ago, the editorial team of Houshamadyan obtained a collection of photographs that belonged to Hovhannes Haroutyunian. The collection is dominated by snapshots of Hovhannes’ garden in Aleppo, as well as the flowers he grew in it. The photographs were provided to us by our longtime friend and associate, Nany Torossian Tendjoukian, who first came across them in San Francisco. At the time, the collection was in the care of the Kaplanian family, relations of Hovhannes Haroutyunian. Nany scanned the photographs and provided us with digital copies.

As our readers have probably noticed, in the last few months, we have been using the DeOldify computer program to colorize old black-and-white photographs. This was a good opportunity to once again put the program to use and colorize the monochrome photographs of the garden to breathe new beauty into them. However, we still needed an appropriate article to complement the collection. Fortunately, Maroush Yeramian came to our aid. Her heartwarming article fuses together old Aleppo, her memories of the city, Hovhannes Haroutyunian’s biography, and his magical garden of flowers.

Our gratitude to Annie Kaplanian, who provided us with the details of Hovhannes Haroutyunian’s biography.
