Did you know that archeological data indicates that approximately 35% of the territory of present-day Armenia was originally forested? By 1990, that percentage had gone down to 12%, and by 2016, it was reduced to a paltry 6% forestation.

The ANCA has been working with Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Representative Katherine Clark (D-MA) and a growing group of Congressional leaders to double Armenia's forestation levels from 6% to 12% in the next 10 years by supporting passage of the Haiti-Armenia Reforestation Act of 2018 (S.3272 and H.R.6503).

This bill would authorize the President to provide both Armenia and Haiti with grants and debt-forgiveness to reverse the effects of deforestation and to meet specific targets for the restoration of forest cover.

Why focus on Haiti and Armenia? Because the governments of Haiti and Armenia are undertaking meaningful efforts to expand forest cover and implement sound forestry practices, but are in need of financial and technical support to realize their goals.

Take a moment to listen to ANCA Western Region advocate and Leo Sarkisian Internship alum Lilit Bazikyan discuss the importance of leveraging U.S. support for greening Armenia. Then contact your Senators and Representative by visiting anca.org/forest to express your support for the Haiti-Armenia Reforestation Act.
