To All the TV Industry Leaders: Get ready for MIPTV 2024! Started on April 5, The Biggest Weekend in Unscripted: April 6-7
A New Chapter for MIPTV: London Calls as Cannes Bids Farewell
The international television market MIPTV (Marché International des Programmes de Télévision) has been a tradition for the television industry professionals since 1960s. Held in Cannes each spring, the international television market has long been a mainstay of the world’s industry calendar and celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2023. However, the upcoming 2024 edition of MIPTV running from April 8 to 10 will be its curtain call in the French Riviera. Even with the French Riviera’s obvious allure, the number of TV executives who attend the MIPTV market are dwindling, and an increasing number of people are attending virtually.
MIPTV, which thrived as a platform for producers, distributors, and buyers to connect, commission and discover new series and projects for all genres and screens in the global entertainment deal-making hub of Cannes, is transforming. With changes in the global television industry and cost-saving, many companies view MIPTV as an expense they can re-evaluate. Netflix, Amazon, Disney and Sony won’t be on the Croisette this spring. Companies are thinking of more “effective” ways of allocating their resources.
This trend has also been attributed to the rising prominence of other events such as Series Mania, Content London, and The London TV Screenings, which have increasingly attracted the market’s attention and participation with exponential growth in recent years.
The London Screenings, a less formal setting when producers plan presentations for foreign buyers, is one of those methods that fits the bill. It takes place in late February. (Unlike MIPTVwhere buyers pass will cost EUR699, and visitor pass EUR 905, there is no admission price to the London Screening event, and buyers and sellers are primarily in charge of scheduling.)
As the television industry stands at a crossroads, with digital transformation, shifting consumer preferences, and the rise of streaming platforms reshaping the way content is produced, distributed, and consumed, the decision to move the MIPTV spring market to the British capital was announced by France-based events organizer RX. This move signals a fresh start for the market in a city that has become a central hub for the TV industry’s most influential gatherings. The inaugural MIP London is scheduled for February 24 to 27, 2025, and will be hosted at the prestigious Savoy Hotel, alongside the London Screenings to capitalize on the popularity of it. This new arrangement aims to create a complementary experience for attendees, offering new possibilities for collaborations, fostering greater synergies and networking opportunities within the television industry.
The MITV 2024 opening ceremony will be held on April 8.
