Armenian-American billionaire Steven Kandarian was born in West Hartford, Connecticut, to Albert and Lily Kandarian, who fled to the United States from the Ottoman Empire in the late 19th century.
As of 2019, Kandarian holds the position of an independent director of the American multinational engineering firm AECOM, in 2018 – an independent director of Exxon Mobil Corporation.
Kandaryan's official fortune is estimated at $25 billion. About 90% of the top 100 Fortune 500 companies are MetLife corporate customers. Today, MetLife is also ranked 31st in the list of the 500 largest companies in the world.
Steve Kandarian is one of the biggest Armenian philanthropists, but he prefers not to advertise his activities. Every year he transfers millions of dollars to the accounts of Armenian charitable foundations. His companies provide assistance to leading Armenian lobbying groups in the US. According to one of the authoritative American publications, Kandaryan is the “gray cardinal” of the Armenian lobby.
