Welcome to Our New Superintendent, Dr. Vivian Ekchian!

Dr. Vivian Ekchian, a 20-year Glendale resident, has signed a four-year contract as GUSD’s new Superintendent, beginning July 1. Dr. Ekchian has served the Los Angeles Unified School District in a wide variety of roles, including classroom teacher, principal, Director of Instruction, Chief of Staff to the Superintendent, Chief Human Resources Officer, Chief Labor Negotiator, and Interim Superintendent, serving most recently as the Deputy Superintendent. Dr. Ekchian recently completed her doctorate in Educational Leadership at USC, with a concentration on leadership in urban settings.

The District is fortunate to have found such a highly qualified leader in Dr. Ekchian, who will bring to GUSD her extensive experience in one of the largest, most diverse school districts in the country. “I am thrilled to join the GUSD family, said Dr. Ekchian, “and I look forward to accelerating the transformative work that is occurring throughout the District, while maintaining a steadfast focus on preparing all students for college, career, and life.”

Summer School is Already in Session!

Many of our students are gaining credits and continuing their learning with summer school classes, which are being offered at Crescenta Valley, Daily, Glendale, and Hoover High Schools, as well as Roosevelt, Rosemont, Toll, and Wilson Middle Schools. Middle School students will attend summer classes on their home campuses. Classes are held five days a week for two semesters. Semester 1 runs from June 17 through July 2, and Semester 2 will be held from July 3 through July 19. The Independence Day holiday will be observed on Thursday, July 4.

School counselors are working through the summer to support continued student learning. To enroll in Semester 2, students can contact their home school counselor.

School Smarts Parent Academy

We are excited to have completed a successful pilot of the School Smarts Parent Academy at Balboa, Muir, Verdugo Woodlands, and R.D. White Elementary Schools, with site administrators serving as facilitators. The Academy is a national and California State PTA parent engagement program that brings together multiple parent groups in support of their common interest in helping children succeed in school. The program is available in 6 languages—Arabic, Chinese, English, Spanish, Tagalog, and Vietnamese.
