Aram I’s Pontifical Encyclical was read on Sunday, Jan. 14, during the Holy Liturgy at St. Gregory the Illuminator Cathedral in Antelias, as well as and in all Armenian Orthodox dioceses and parish churches under the jurisdiction of the Armenian Catholicosate of Cilicia.

In the Pontifical Encyclical, His Holiness provides a brief account on the events that led to the creation of independence and highlights the fact that the Armenian Church had a significant role in the creation of Armenia’s independence.

“Centuries of history testify that regimes are temporary—nations with their faith, fatherland, and culture are eternal” reads a part of the Encyclical. “The strengthening of Armenia and Artsakh is the foundation of our national…

Historic Ordination: Tehran Diocese of the Armenian Church Ordains Deaconess

The Primate of the Diocese of Tehran (under the jurisdiction of the Catholicosate of Cilicia) ordained a young woman as a deaconess in Tehran’s St. Sarkis Mother Church on Sept. 25, 2017. Even as the office of deaconess had existed in Armenian Church convents for centuries, this was a historic first. It is the first time that a lay woman, not a nun, was ordained a “parish deacon.”

“What I have done is in conformity with the Tradition of the Church and nothing else,” said Archbishop Sarkissian. This was his personal initiative as a diocesan primate in order, as he explained, “to revitalize the participation of women also in our church’s liturgical life,” adding, “do not be…

Many of us would like to believe that the power to change the world lies in the hands of consumers—but does it actually?

That’s a question I posed recently to Greg Asbed, a recent recipient of the highly coveted MacArthur Fellowship—the so-called “Genius Grant”—which awards $625,000, no-strings-attached, to individuals with outstanding talent “as an investment in their potential.”

Asbed has dedicated the last few decades of his life to transforming an oft-neglected sector of the food industry: labor. More specifically, his work has centered on the plight of farm workers in Immokalee, Fla., where 90 percent of the United States’ winter tomatoes are picked and whose farms supply countless fast food enterprises.
